The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), with other NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices (ICOs), intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for phased cooperative research applications to conduct efficient, large-scale embedded pragmatic or implementation trials within health care systems. Research focused on improving health outcomes in Americans across the lifespan and addressing health disparities in populations who experience higher rates of certain diseases and higher mortality compared with the general population will be a high priority. Results from the pragmatic or implementation trials supported by this FOA should inform policy makers, payers, health care providers and patients across diverse patient care settings. Awards made under this FOA will initially support a one-year milestone-driven planning phase (UG3), with possible transition to a performance phase (UH3). UG3 projects that have met the scientific milestone and feasibility requirements may transition to the UH3 phase. The UG3/UH3 application must be submitted as a single application.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. 

The FOA is expected to be published in Summer 2021 with an expected application due date in Fall 2021.

This FOA will utilize the UG3/UH3 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of pragmatic or implementation trials embedded in health care systems to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.

In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in pragmatic or implementation trials and interventions to reduce or eliminate health disparities in specific health populations will be encouraged, and these investigators should also begin considering applying under the new FOA.

Among the areas of research encouraged in this initiative are trials that will evaluate the effectiveness of or study strategies used to effectively, equitably, and efficiently implement evidence-based interventions and/or guidelines. This FOA will require that the intervention under study be embedded into health care delivery systems, “real world” settings. Studies can propose to integrate multi-componentor multiple interventions that have demonstrated efficacy into HCS; or implement HCS changes to improve adherence to evidence-based guidelines. Trials should be conducted across three or more health care systems (HCS) that provide care to generalizable patient populations, and it is encouraged that investigators include populations experiencing health disparities. All trials will become part of and work with the NIH HCS Research Collaboratory program and have access to the expertise of the HCS Collaboratory Coordinating Center. Each participating Institute, Center and Office (ICO) will identify high priority research areas for this FOA.
