Part 2. Section I. Funding Opportunity Description

Specific Areas of Research Interest

NCCAM is interested in research on complementary approaches to pain and symptom management such as spinal manipulation, yoga, massage, acupuncture, tai chi, hypnosis, meditation, and mindfulness techniques.  Examples of specific research questions or projects of interest to NCCAM include but are not limited to:

  • Research studying complementary pain management approaches to reduce prescription drug use/prevent prescription drug abuse
  • Research studying complementary health approaches to promote adherence to or to enhance outcomes in evidence-based substance abuse treatment interventions. 
  • Research studying complementary approaches to reduce stress and enhance coping in the context of substance abuse treatment/abstinence efforts.

Potential applicants are encouraged to conduct research in primary care settings and pain clinics and to utilize existing research resources, platforms or systems such as NIH Clinical Translational Science Award sites (CTSAs), Practice Based Research Networks (PBRNs), NIH Clinical Trials Networks, and VHA or DoD Healthcare systems.
