Release Date: May 16, 2011
The purpose of this Notice is to inform investigators that
the current NIH Parent K24 Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented
is being refocused at NCCAM to include a strong preference for a partnership
with the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) institutional
Consortium. The notice clarifies the programmatic priority for the use of the
K24, with the expectation that the K24 candidate’s expressed commitment
(25-50%) and demonstrated success to serve as a qualified mentor increases the
pool of well-trained CAM clinician scientists in the future.
The K24 awarded by NCCAM will provide protected time to mid-career, clinician-scientists for (1) patient-oriented research within the CTSA consortium; and for (2) mentoring early stage clinical translational investigators with the stated goal to pursue clinical research careers in complementary and alternative [CAM] medicine. There is a critical need for mentoring junior clinician scientists [e.g., K23, KL-2] in order to increase the pool of eligible candidates in sustainable CAM research careers. The goal of the CTSA linked award is to enhance the success of CAM mid-career clinical investigators (typically at the Associate Professor rank) with established careers by helping to build nationally recognized, clinical translational research capacity, multi-disciplinary career development and CAM training programs through greater integration with the CTSA parent and partnering institutions. The success of the linked award also depends on the K24 candidate’s ability to guide early-stage clinician scientists to achieve independent funding and sustain research careers, especially at CTSA parent and partnering institutions.
