Purpose

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), intends to promote a new initiative as part of the Chemical Countermeasures Research Program (CCRP) by publishing a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications for research on skin injuries caused by chemical threats, with an emphasis on investigating the commonalities of such injuries and identifying potential shared signaling pathways and therapeutic targets for medical countermeasure development.

This Notice allows potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The NOFO is expected to be published in Fall 2024, and the application is expected to be due in Winter/Spring 2025.

This NOFO will utilize the R34 activity code. Details of the planned NOFO are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This initiative intends to encourage the NIAMS skin research community to contribute to the basic understanding of injuries caused by those toxic chemicals and materials identified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as high-consequence public health Chemicals of Concern (CoC) and to explore the local and systemic mechanisms of chemical wound development, healing, and long-term consequences.  This initiative will emphasize understanding commonalities in the fundamental mechanisms of skin injuries caused by CoCs, including vesicants (e.g., sulfur mustard, Lewisite, nitrogen mustard, phosgene oxime, and arsenicals) and toxic industrial/corrosive chemicals and materials (e.g., aqueous hydrochloric acid, oleum, nitric acid, and chlorosulfuric acid). Investigators are encouraged to contact the Scientific/Research Contact(s) listed below to ensure the proposed chemicals are within the initiative's scope, i.e., CoCs. It is hoped that the fundamental knowledge gained would ultimately lead to the discovery and characterization of potential shared therapeutic targets (e.g., in signal transduction pathways and inflammation process) and the development of medical countermeasures that are broadly effective against multiple CoCs.

This notice is intended for investigators who are not currently supported under the Chemical Countermeasures Research Program (CCRP), but whose research interests are relevant to skin chemical injuries and to skin wound healing in general. It is assumed that the proposed project will represent a new direction for the applicant, which requires the applicant’s research lab to acquire new skills (e.g., handling toxic chemicals), gather new resources (e.g., establishing collaborative or contractual relationships with facilities certified to utilize restricted/controlled chemicals) and generate new preliminary data.
