Purpose

This Notice is to inform potential applicants of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) intent to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for NIAID Bioinformatics Resource Centers (BRCs) for Infectious Diseases to provide knowledgebases and bioinformatics services to the infectious disease community. The BRC Program accommodates genomic and multi-omic data and tools for viruses, bacteria and eukaryotic pathogens, vectors, host-interactions, and microbiomes related to NIAID’s mission to advance research on infectious diseases and in response to public health emergencies.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants additional time to develop meaningful collaborations, interdisciplinary teams, and responsive applications.

The FOA will utilize cooperative agreements with the U24 (Resource-Related Projects) activity code.

Research Initiative Details

The purpose of this FOA is to support a NIAID Bioinformatics Resource Centers (BRC) Program that will consist of four key components: 1) interactive knowledgebase(s) for relevant omics-based data and analysis; 2) research and development of innovative bioinformatics tools, software, and algorithms; 3) provide access to leading-edge expertise in bioinformatics services for the infectious diseases community for complex or unique situations; 4) and offer cutting-edge informatics support during a public health emergency, outbreak, or pandemic.

To achieve all four elements of BRC Program of this FOA, applicants may address at least one or both ENTIRE set(s) of the following two biological domains. (1) viral families; bacterial and archaea; and metagenomics/microbiome/viromes relevant to infectious diseases; (2) eukaryotic and metazoan pathogens; vectors for human pathogens; and hosts-pathogen interactions relevant to biomedical research. Applicants may address both biological domains.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to form interdisciplinary teams with expertise in genomics, bioinformatics, data science, computational biology, and infectious diseases and develop responsive projects.

Further details will be included in the forthcoming FOA.

Funding Information
Estimated Total Funding

NIAID intends to commit approximately $9 million in FY 2024

Expected Number of Awards

NIAID anticipates making 1-2 awards with a five-year duration for each.

Estimated Award Ceiling

Budgets for direct costs depend on number of proposed biological domains addressed in the application; budgets are not expected to exceed $2,500,000 per year for one biological domain. Budgets are not expected to exceed $4,800,000 per year for two biological domains. Application budgets need to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project.
