Purpose

NIAID is encouraging applications to PA-18-591 (Administrative Supplements to Existing NIH Grants and Cooperative Agreements) from investigators with active NIAID-supported research project grants (R01, P01), cooperative agreements (U01, U19) and SBIR/STTR awards to address the research areas of interest outlined in “A Universal Influenza Vaccine: The Strategic Plan for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.” The proposed research should have clear relevance to the research objectives defined in the strategic plan, which encompasses three major research areas:

  • Improve understanding of transmission, natural history and pathogenesis of influenza virus infection
  • Precisely characterize influenza immunity and correlates of immune protection
  • Support rational design of universal influenza vaccines
As an administrative supplement, the proposed research must be within the scope of the active award.

NIAID active awards with project end dates in FY 2019 or later are eligible. The award may not be in a no-cost extension or going into a no-cost extension in FY 2018.

Clinical trials will not be supported.

New foreign components are not allowed.

Recommended supplement budgets of up to one year and $250,000 in direct costs (excluding consortium F&A) may be requested.

All applicants are encouraged to discuss potential requests with their program official or the contact named below. Additionally, prior to submission, applicants should review the NIAID Administrative Supplement SOP to ensure the request meets IC requirements.

Applicants should begin their Research Strategy by stating: “This application is being submitted in response to NOT-AI-18-030."

Requests must be received by June 1, 2018 for funding in FY 2018.
