DESCRIPTION

This Notice is to highlight microbicide research opportunities sponsored by
NIH. The grant and contract programs shown here integrate to provide a
complete research path from earliest discovery through proof of concept
testing. The NIH is seeking applications at each stage of development to
bolster the breadth and depth of the science we are supporting. A brief
description of each program follows.

INNOVATION GRANTS FOR AIDS RESEARCH - PA 02-046
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-02-046.html)

This PA seeks applications at the earliest steps in the microbicide
development pathway. This solicitation seeks the submission of applications
to bring new, scientifically challenging and untested ideas into AIDS
research including microbicides. In brief, the sponsoring NIH institutes are
seeking applications in the following areas for this PA:

Microbicide discovery - objectives may include, but are not limited to, new
approaches for microbicides addressing:

o viral and cellular processes involved in the transmission, local
propagation, and spread of HIV
o processes for cervicovaginal and rectal transmission of HIV
o improved methods of formulation and delivery
o preclinical systems to test microbicide safety and efficacy

INTEGRATED PRECLINICAL/CLINICAL PROGRAM FOR TOPICAL MICROBICIDES PAR-03-137
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-03-137.html)

This solicitation provides opportunities to advance safe, novel topical
microbicides and microbicide combination strategies that prevent the sexual
transmission of HIV, from preclinical to clinical studies. This purpose of
this program is: (1) to encourage discovery and preclinical development of
lead topical microbicide candidates and combinations, and (2) to foster
translation of safe, new microbicides/ combinations from preclinical studies
to pilot clinical studies. The ultimate goal of this research is the
development and exploratory clinical evaluation of new and potentially
effective microbicides for the prevention of HIV sexual transmission.

HIV MICROBICIDE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT TEAMS RFP-NIH-NIAID-DAIDS-04-04
http://www.niaid.nih.gov/contract/rfps.htm

The HIV Microbicide Design and Development Teams (HMDDT) solicitation seeks
to fund consortia of scientists with product development experience from
industry and/or academia that have 1) identified a promising microbicide
concept, and 2) devised a plan for its targeted development in to a product
testable in humans. The expectation is that the Teams advance their
microbicide concepts along a well-defined development path in a timely manner
to a microbicide product and in to clinical testing with the five-year period
of the award.
