NIAID SMALL BUSINESS PROGRAM ON BIOTERRORISM-RELATED RESEARCH (SB-BTRR) Release Date: November 26, 2001 NOTICE: NOT-AI-02-005 Receipt Date: January 23, 2002 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) (http://www.niaid.nih.gov) NIAID announces an amendment to the NIH Omnibus Solicitation for Small Business Innovation Research(SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Grant Applications (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/sbirsttr1/index.pdf) to encourage SBIR and STTR grants on Bioterrorism-Related Research (SB-BTRR). The purpose of this program is to fund SBIR and STTR grants focused on organisms that may be used in bioterrorism activities. All other requirements and instructions for NIH SBIR and STTR applications apply. The January 23, 2002 receipt date is one time only. SB-BTRR Applications received after this date will be considered for normal SBIR and STTR receipt dates. NIAID expects successful applications for this program to be awarded within 3 5 months of receipt. The SB-BTRR will support SBIR and STTR applications for applied research targeted at the design and development of specific diagnostics, therapies, and prevention strategies for Category A biological diseases as defined by the CDC (http://www.bt.cdc.gov/Agent/Agentlist.asp), which includes: Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), Clostridium botulinum toxin (botulism), Yersinia pestis (plague), Variola major (smallpox), Francisella tularensis (tularemia) and pathogens responsible for viral hemorrhagic fevers. Specifically, this notice encourages research to develop: o rapid, accurate diagnostics for natural and bioengineered microbes and/or toxins; o novel targets for effective treatments for those infected; o new prevention strategies for those at risk of exposure; and o improved screening methodologies for potential antimicrobials/antitoxins Research that builds on recent advances in genomics and proteomics of these organisms is especially encouraged. Potential applicants are encouraged to review information on the bioterrorism page of the NIAID Internet site. http://www.niaid.nih.gov/publications/bioterrorism.htm INQUIRIES Inquiries are strongly encouraged. The opportunity to clarify any issues or questions from potential applicants are welcome.
