NOTICE TO ENCOURAGE PH.D.S TO APPLY FOR MENTORED PATIENT-ORIENTED RESEARCH CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARDS (K23) Release Date: September 17, 2001 NOTICE: NOT-AI-01-028 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases PURPOSE The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) encourages applications for the Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23), from individuals holding the Ph.D. degree who are conducting or propose to conduct patient-oriented research. The K23 mechanism provides support for three to five years of supervised study and research for professionals who have the potential to develop into productive investigators in the area of patient- oriented research. Individuals with backgrounds in engineering, computer science, and other quantitative areas of expertise are especially encouraged to apply. For the purpose of this award, patient-oriented research is defined as research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens, and cognitive phenomena) that require direct interaction with human subjects. This area of research includes: 1) mechanisms of human disease; 2) therapeutic interventions; 3) clinical trials, and 4) the development of new technologies. The rationale behind this notice is NIAID’s belief that the inclusion of more Ph.D.s may lead to more productive outcomes in patient-oriented research by promoting not only bench-to-bedside, but bedside-to-bench interactions. Application for K23s from Ph.D.s is already allowed under the present guidelines (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-004.html), although applications to NIAID for this award have been exclusively from individuals with the M.D. degree.
