Purpose

NIA issues this Notice to correct two issues in application instructions for PAR-17-287 "NIA Academic Leadership Career Award (K07)".

1. Section IV Research Plan Section, Research Strategy contains an incomplete sentence fragment. This Notice amends the text by deleting that sentence fragment.

All instructions in the SF424 (R&R) Application Guide must be followed, with the following additional instructions:
Research Strategy

  • The research plan should describe the strategy to implement the program at the institution. It should justify the chosen elements with evidence of their effectiveness drawn from other contexts. It should establish the

Describe in outline the program you intend to implement that will initiate or expand a particular field of aging research at your institution.

Candidate’s Plan to Provide Mentoring
  • This required component should include a description of the availability of appropriate junior investigators for mentoring and advancement; their previous training and specialization; plans for recruitment, selection and supervision; the types of educational and research experiences that will be provided; and the capacity in which the candidate program director for the career award will serve as a mentor.
  • If there is an existing (clinical) research curriculum (e.g., CTSA), describe how the mentoring plan will be integrated with the curriculum. Candidates must also describe a plan for supporting the research of their mentees during the period of the career award.
  • Describe the availability of an appropriate pool of investigators in training (e.g. graduate students, residents, post-doctoral fellows) for mentoring; their previous training; plans for their supervision; and how planned educational and research experiences will be tailored to their background and experience.
  • Describe the candidate’s record of mentoring.
