Purpose

The National Institute on Aging intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for NIA-designated Alzheimer's Disease Centers (ADCs) to foster research on the nature of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and serve as major sources of development of more effective approaches to prevention, diagnosis, care and therapy. ADCs are expected to contribute significantly to the development of shared resources that support dementia relevant research, collaborate and coordinate their research efforts with other NIH-funded programs and investigators, and disseminate research findings for the benefit of the community.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in Fall 2017 with an expected application due date in Spring 2018.

This FOA will utilize the P30 activity code. This will require existing NIA-funded P50 Alzheimer's Disease Centers to convert their operations by applying for the P30 FOA in the final year of their current P50 award. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

The NIA recently completed a strategic planning process to ensure that the next generation of AD Centers is poised to accomplish the goals of the National Alzheimer’s Plan. The 166 recommendations outline a roadmap for the ADC Program to leverage historical strengths and unique resources to transform the field of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias research to better understand disease and symptom heterogeneity, increase research utilization of real world clinical information, identify early risk and protective factors, and accelerate translational research advances to clinical practice. In implementing these recommendations, NIA intends to provide increased resources to allow centers to expand core capacity that may be directed towards fulfilling particular recommendations.

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into the area of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias to consider applying for this new FOA. To facilitate discovery and its translation into direct benefit to patients and the general public, the NIA awards ADCs to institutions that have a critical mass of excellent dementia-relevant scientific research.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
