Purpose

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) is updating its Strategic Directions (refer to http://www.nia.nih.gov/about/strategic-directions) to help guide the research it supports over the next five years. Public input on the topics to be included in the plan and suggestions regarding how to enhance the NIA research portfolio are critical initial steps in this effort.  NIA leadership and staff will review and consider the comments as the Institute updates its Strategic Directions.

Information Requested

Through this Request for Information (RFI), NIA invites feedback from researchers in academia and industry, health care professionals, patient advocates and health advocacy organizations, scientific or professional organizations, federal agencies, and other interested members of the public.  Organizations are strongly encouraged to submit a single response that reflects the views of their organization and membership as a whole.

Please provide your perspective on the following issues as they relate to the Strategic Directions http://www.nia.nih.gov/about/strategic-directions:

  • Research needs and opportunities that should be modified because of progress over the past five years.
  • Emerging research needs and future opportunities that should be added to the plan.

NIA also welcomes your general comments, including those regarding the extent to which this plan will guide, and encourage participation in aging research.

When commenting on a research need or opportunity, your comments can contain but are not limited to information pertaining to the following:

  • Description of the opportunity: Addressing a new opportunity for research not covered in this draft plan.
  • Rationale: The scientific evidence or clinical basis for the proposed change or addition and the anticipated impacts that accomplishments or advances related to this issue would have on the scientific community and human health.
