The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has developed a website to facilitate sharing of research models, tissue or data, the Database for Sharing Aging Research Models (D-SARM) (http://dsarm.niapublications.org/). Our goal is to make it easier for investigators to find other investigators who have research models in which they are interested, such as transgenic mice, mutant mice and rats, and knock-out mice. The database was developed with mouse and rat models in mind, but it is not limited to rodent models. Investigators engaged in research on the biology of aging using model organisms are encouraged to list their models in the database and include relevant descriptors of the model, such as ‘caloric restricted’, “rapamycin treated’, etc.
The search function on the website is open to all investigators, but a password is required to join the network and submit information on the models in your laboratory. Investigators who list model organisms have their identity protected by a self-chosen user-name, so that initial contact is blinded, allowing the individual with the model in question to determine how to make contact with potential requestors.
