Announcing Changes in the Eligibility Criteria for Use of the NIA Aged Rodent Colony

Notice Number: NOT-AG-10-007

Key Dates
Release Date:  July 21, 2010

Issued by
National Institute on Aging (NIA), (http://www.nia.nih.gov/)

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has traditionally subsidized aging research funded by many NIH Institutes, Federal Agencies and private Foundations, by allowing grantees of those institutes/agencies/foundations access to the NIA aged rodent colonies.  While NIA values this collaborative contribution to the field of aging research, it carries a burden, both in the fiscal contribution and in the management of the colonies.  Due to a surge in use of the aged mouse colony in recent months, NIA has implemented a temporary restriction on sales from the aged mouse colony to NIA-funded projects only, that began on July 1, 2010.  This restriction is required to protect the NIA’s investment in aging research, as the rapid increase in use has depleted the colony to the point of compromising NIA-funded research.  This restriction is for the aged mouse colony only and does not affect the other NIA aged rodent colonies.  We regret the impact that this restriction has on research funded by other entities, but the action is required to permit NIA to provide the necessary resources for its grantees to carry out the NIA’s research mission.

The full text of the revised policy for use of the NIA aged rodent colonies is posted on the rodent colony website: http://www.nia.nih.gov/ResearchInformation/ScientificResources/AgedRodentColoniesHandbook/EligibilityCriteriaForUseoftheNIAAgedRodentColonies.htm

All information for ordering from the NIA aged rodent colonies is posted on the web:

The new policy is effective July 1, 2010 and remains in effect until further notice.
