The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for an R34 Clinical Trial Required mechanism focusing on alcohol treatment and recovery research. This FOA will focus broadly on topics relevant for treatment of and recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD), including: medications development, precision medicine, behavioral therapies and mechanisms of behavioral change (MOBC), recovery, translational research, and innovative methods and technologies for AUD treatment and recovery.
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
The FOA is expected to be published in Spring 2022 with an expected application due date in Summer 2022.
This FOA will utilize the R34 Clinical Trial Required activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.
This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into the areas of treatment and recovery for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.
This FOA will emphasize multiple topics related to the broad field of treatment of and recovery from AUD. Areas of interest include the following: medications development, precision medicine, behavioral health therapies and mechanisms of behavioral change (MOBC), recovery from AUD, and translational research. Medications development includes developing and evaluating new, more efficacious and safe medications for AUD and comorbid conditions. This topic includes developing new methods to discover druggable targets and predict their efficacy in clinical trials. Advancing precision medicine for AUD should informs diagnosis and treatment of AUD based on biomarkers and clinical and behavioral characteristics.
Other areas of interest include topics focusing on special-emphasis and underserved populations of individuals with AUD. Specific examples include research related to health disparities, age, gender, race and ethnicity, sexual and gender minorities, and co-occurring psychiatric and other substance use disorders.
