Research Interest Areas

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

The mission of NIAAA is to generate and disseminate fundamental knowledge about the effects of alcohol on health and well-being, and apply that knowledge to improve diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of alcohol-related problems, including alcohol use disorder, across the lifespan. NIAAA has particular interest in ensuring that this mission extends to meeting the health needs of health disparity populations and, in this particular mechanism, American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. AI/AN members are disproportionately negatively impacted by alcohol use and alcohol use disorder. NIAAA is committed to funding research to address this burden. NIAAA’s research interests include, but are not limited to:

  • Life course specific topics at the intersection of AI/AN communities and alcohol, e.g., adolescent alcohol consumption, alcohol use in later life
  • Culturally-informed adaptation, dissemination, and implementation of relevant prevention and treatment approaches
  • Community-based participatory research approaches
  • Increased participation of AI/AN researchers in alcohol-related studies, including training and mentoring opportunities
  • Recovery and prevention of a return to heavy-drinking
  • Health services (including accessibility, cost, treatment settings, etc.) research
