Purpose

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) inviting Specialized Center Cooperative Agreement (U54) applications for the implementation of collaborative partnership awards between institutions serving underserved communities and populations (IUCP) and other institutions with extensive alcohol research programs, including NIAAA-funded alcohol research centers(ARC).

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop responsive projects.

The FOA will utilize the U54 activity code, which provides a mechanism for fostering a mutually beneficial collaboration between IUCP and ARC. This FOA is expected to be published in the spring of 2020 with an expected application due date in the Fall 2020.

Ressearch Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators to submit applications to build and promote alcohol research expertise and to develop alcohol research infrastructure and capacity at IUCP and to enhance the development of a diverse biomedical workforce. Through productive partnership with ARC, this FOA aims to build and promote alcohol research expertise and to develop alcohol research infrastructure and capacity at IUCP. Institutions serving diverse and disadvantaged communities with a documented historical mission to educate students from nationally underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to consider applying for this opportunity.

Estimated Total Funding: $ 1.5 M, for fiscal year 2021
Expected Number of Awards: 2
Estimated Award Ceiling: Applications for the IUCP are limited to a budget of up to $700,000 in direct costs during Years 1-2. Direct costs can increase in years 3-5 to a maximum of $750,000 per year. An IUCP can partner with only one alcohol research intensive institution (ARC). The aggregate total direct costs for the partnering ARC are capped at $200,000 direct cost per year
