MODIFICATION OF ALLOWABLE COSTS FOR NICHD CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARDS Release Date: July 26, 1999 National Institute of Child Health and Human Development The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) announces a modification in allowable costs for Mentored Research Scientist Development Awards (K01), Independent Scientist Awards (K02), and Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards (K08) supported by the Institute. This notice amends the NICHD supplemental guidelines for these awards published in the NIH GUIDE, Volume 24, Number 40, November 24,1995 (K02, K08) and Volume 25, Number 1, January 26, 1996 (K01), and available on the Internet at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not96-301.html, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/1995/95.11.24/notice-nichd-supplem005.html, and http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/1995/95.11.24/notice-nichd-supplem006.html. MODIFIED PROVISIONS OF THE AWARDS o Allowable costs for NICHD K01, K02, and K08 awards Salary - Individual compensation is based on the institution’s salary scale for individuals at an equivalent experience level. Funding from this award for salary may be provided up to a maximum of $75,000 per year plus commensurate fringe benefits for a full-time employee with at least 75 percent effort devoted to the research program. NIH policy permits supplementation of salary from non-Federal sources. o Additional allowable costs for NICHD K01 and K08 awards Research and Development Support - A maximum of $25,000 per year may be requested for research costs such as technical personnel, telecommunications, supplies, small items of equipment, candidate travel, publication costs, and tuition for necessary courses. Facilities and Administrative costs will continue to be paid at eight percent for all career development awards. All other requirements previously announced remain in effect. These modifications, representing an increase in the maximum funding level for the specified NICHD career development awards, become effective with Type 1 grants funded in FY 1999.
