NIDCD Specific Information:

NIDCD K23 awards are intended to facilitate the research independence of clinically-trained individuals:

  • seeking to integrate both clinical practice and research trajectories in their careers;
  • having an aggregate of two or more years of prior research experience;
  • holding or having secured positions of junior academic rank (assistant or associate professor), or the equivalent in non-academic employment settings. Applicants cannot have been at the rank of associate professor, or its equivalent, for more than two years.  Extension of this eligibility window may be possible for applicants promoted to associate professor on a clinical track, i.e., based on accomplishments in patient care and education rather than in research and scholarship.  NIDCD approval for an extension of eligibility must be granted by the NIDCD Program Contact in advance of submission.

The NIDCD encourages beginning clinician-scientists to consider applying for a short period of support through an NIDCD R03 award (PAR-10-055), if needed, to demonstrate the feasibility of the research to be proposed in their K23 applications.

The NIDCD has the following special requirements for its K23 applicants:

  • To facilitate regular face-to-face contact within the mentoring relationship, the primary sponsor of the K23 shall be based at the applicant's home institution or at an institution within a reasonable distance (i.e., approximately 100 miles) of the applicant's institution.
  • The career development plan must include a graduate-level course in biostatistics and research design, to be completed during the first year of the award, or provide evidence that such training was previously completed by the applicant.
  • An external advisory committee of two scientists with records of Federal research funding and of mentoring new investigators in the field of the proposed research career development, but are not the applicant's sponsor(s) or collaborators, shall be constituted.  The purpose of the external advisory committee is to: 1) advise the awardee in attaining the goals of the career development program; and 2) to help ensure that the institution's commitment's to the terms of the award are being met.  These committee members shall commit to be available to the candidate for consultation on an as-needed basis and to site visit the awardee during Years Two and Four of the K23 award.   A report of the external advisory committee shall be incorporated into the (noncompeting) continuation progress report for Years Three and Five of the award.

NIDCD will generally limit its aggregate support of research career development across institutional and individual mentored K-awards (e.g., K12 or KL2 followed by the K08 or K23) to six years, but will allow seven years of support with written permission from the NIDCD Scientific/Research Program Contact when the candidate changes scientific focus between the institutional and individual K-awards.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Program Director listed as the Scientific/Research Contact prior to preparing an application.

Salary Support: Up to $105,000 plus fringe benefits per year.

NIDCR sponsors the K23 Career Development Award to ensure training of highly qualified dentists or other clinicians in patient-oriented oral health research  relevant to the NIDCR Strategic Plan.  Prospective candidates must have a DDS, DMD, MD or other clinical doctoral degree.  The award can be used by dentists who wish to pursue a graduate research training program that results in the Ph.D. degree.  Health professionals with a doctoral degree may use the award for postdoctoral research training. The intent of this program is to support the development of independent clinician-scientists. The NIDCR will not provide support for clinical specialty training under this program.

The NIDCR will not accept Career Development Award applications which propose to conduct a multisite clinical study, a clinical trial, or clinical biomarker evaluation study. Clinician scientists seeking training in the conduct of clinical trials or biomarker evaluation studies should instead propose an ancillary study within an on-going research program. For NIDCR policy regarding support of clinical trials and biomarker evaluation studies, see NOT-DE-11-002 New NIDCR Policy: Investigator-Initiated Clinical Trials Include Biomarker Clinical Evaluation Studies.

Individuals who have been appointed to a tenure-track faculty position supported by the NIH P30 program are not eligible to apply for a mentored NIDCR Career Development Award.

NIDCR has a 6 year limit of cumulative support on institutional K awards (e.g., K12, KL2) and individual mentored K awards (e.g., K08, K23, K25, K99).

This limit does not apply to Dentists proposing to use the NIDCR Career Development Award to support PhD training.
