Award Trends

Award Trends cover all NIH awarding components and all other award activities.  Awards are funds provided by the NIH to universities, hospitals, and other research institutions.  Includes Ranking Tables and Awards by State and Foreign Site.

Please note that the total cost given in the tables below is the sum of the direct and indirect costs for each fiscal year, and not for the life of the project.

Characteristics of
Distribution of NIH Budget

Effect of Doubling the NIH Budget

The period of doubling of the NIH budget occurred from FY 1998-2003. Data on the trends occurring pre- and post- the doubling period FY (2007-1998) are available in the NIH Extramural Data Book.

Rankings

Please note that while this site contains reports that rank various organizations for fiscal years 1996 through 2005, NIH no longer provides these comparative ranking tables on its medical research funding. Instead, NIH has developed a Web-based tool that allows you to determine the dollars awarded to any one organization or department. The tool will also allow you to download aggregate data, on a per fiscal year basis, so that you can conduct your own analysis.

This change comes in part from responses received from the grantee community that suggested that the current ranking tables were not necessary (see NIH Guide notice Request for Information on the Plan to Recognize Multiple Principal Investigators on NIH Grants) and in part by the establishment of Multiple Investigator Awards (see NIH Guide notice Establishment of Multiple Principal Investigator Awards for the Support of Team Science Projects) making the total dollar amounts of funds received by individual departments impractical.

The following link will direct you to the most current data: Award Data for Individual Organizations. Historical reports that show ranking follow below.
